What is the Dignity of Risk?

The Dignity of Risk is the idea that self-determination and the right to make choices—including choices that might lead to failure—are essential to human dignity. For many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, "over-protection" can sometimes become a barrier to personal growth.

Our mission isn't just to keep people safe; it’s to help them live fully.

How ATGSV Balances Safety and Independence

Through our Circle of Support, we create a safety net that allows for exploration. Whether a participant wants to learn to cook a new meal, navigate a new route on the VTA, or manage their own budget, we provide the guidance to mitigate danger while respecting their right to try.

  1. Collaborative Goal Setting: We sit down with the participant and their family to define what "success" looks like for them.

  2. Incremental Skill Building: We break down complex tasks into manageable steps, using our Skill-Building Video Library and one-on-one coaching.

  3. Reflective Learning: If a choice doesn't go as planned, our Case Managers work with the individual to understand what happened and how to adjust for next time.

Why It Matters

When we respect an individual's right to take risks, we are telling them: "We believe in your capability." This builds the confidence necessary for true community integration and long-term independence in Silicon Valley.

Every "star" at ATGSV has a unique light. By honoring their choices, we help that light shine its brightest.
